Before things turn chaotic, let’s make the rules clear upfront.

Search before you post
People in the community are all willing to help you, but they only have so much time. So, when you have a question, resist the temptation to post it without first searching the site. It is very likely that somebody may have already asked the same question and got the answer. You can then use the saved time for a cup of coffee.

Provide necessary information
When you do need to post a question, don’t keep other people guessing. In addition to the problem you are facing, also tell people the background information such as the environment, language, and code snippets. The more information you provide, the better other people understand your situation, and the faster they can answer.

Be nice and respectful
Respect those who offer to help you and show your appreciation. Even if you don’t agree with them, don’t take things personal. In particular, avoid

  • Name-calling
  • Derogatory comments
  • Discriminatory language
  • Sexually explicit or violent material
  • Other people’s personal information
  • Unauthorized content

Participate and contribute
Building a prosperous community needs everyone’s involvement. Don’t be an onlooker. Be a contributor. Get engaged whenever you can by asking a question, answering a question, making a comment, suggesting a topic for an article, offering to write an article, etc. The more involved you are, the better the community becomes, and the more benefits you will get from the community.

Report issues
When you see an issue, don’t confront it yourself. The best way is to flag it to moderators. They will examine the situation and take action accordingly.
